Birth, Tree, Woman: Gestation by fire
In this project, I sculpted the body of a pregnant tree woman by using clay that was able to withstand firing to create a mini Anagama kiln. I loaded a few clay works into her womb, seal it and fired the woman kiln in the span of 10 hours using twigs and charcoal as fuel. The wood firing process transformed her womb into a glistening naturally glazed cave-like, underwater-like landscape while also resembling the interior of a wood-fired kiln littered with remnants of wood ash, sand and shell marks.
After the firing has been completed, I then glazed and fired the kiln sculpture to maturing temperature and install the parts into an installation resembling a birthing woman.
This piece is an homage to the creative feminine power of fire.
